Edit AI images without losing the parts you like

Use a change list, preserve list, and simple review sheet to direct image revisions.

An image edit needs two instructions: what changes and what stays.

Write a preserve list

Once an image has a composition you like, record the important constants: the subject’s position, clothing, object shape, palette, and crop. Then write the change separately. “Make the background lighter” is easier to assess when the subject and framing are explicitly stable. The tool may still change them, which is why the preserve list also becomes your review checklist.

Use an actual reference for continuity

If continuity matters across a set, work from the same approved reference rather than relying only on a repeated description. Name distinctive details such as a chipped handle or a striped sleeve. Do not assume that reusing a prompt will recreate the same character or object. Compare each output with the reference before you approve it for the set.

Separate exploration from production

During exploration, broad alternatives are useful: illustration versus photography, warm versus cool, close versus wide. During production, you need consistency. Freeze the approved direction in a short brief and number the versions. Save the original before editing. Keep a note such as “version 3: background fixed, label still wrong” so you do not lose track of what remains.

Check what the revision accidentally changed

Compare the whole image, not just the requested area. An edit to a window may alter a reflection, a face, or nearby text. View the output at full size and at its final display size. If you cannot get a small precise detail right through generation, finish that detail in an appropriate editing tool instead of letting repeated revisions damage the rest of the image.

Keep the mug’s shape, blue glaze, position, and camera angle. Change only the background to a pale gray wall. Preserve the handle opening and the shadow direction. Do not add lettering or extra objects.
