Turn explanations into practice with hints, questions, teach-back, and a final attempt without help.

Tell the assistant what you already understand

Start with your current explanation, even if it is incomplete. “I think a percentage is a fraction out of 100, but I get confused about percentage change” is useful context. Ask the assistant to find the gap rather than repeat an entire textbook chapter. Supply the course material when allowed so the vocabulary and method match what you are expected to learn.

Ask for the next hint

When a problem is difficult, request a small hint and try again. Ask the assistant to wait for your attempt before showing a solution. A worked answer is useful after you have something to compare it with. If you get a step wrong, ask why that step fails and try a nearby example. The goal is to practice the decision you will need to make independently.

Change the surface of the problem

A familiar example can feel easier because you remember the wording. Ask for a different situation using the same underlying idea. After practicing percentage change with ticket sales, try it with a quantity that decreases. Explain your reasoning in your own words. If the assistant praises an incorrect answer, check it against the method or source rather than treating encouragement as a grade.

Finish away from the conversation

Close the explanation and solve a new problem or explain the concept aloud. Make a note of where you hesitate. That hesitation gives you a more precise next question. Follow the rules of your course or assessment and use appropriate sources to check factual material. AI practice can support learning, but it does not prove mastery or replace the work you need to do yourself.
