Keep a long AI project on track with a useful handoff

Create a compact record of decisions, artifacts, unresolved questions, and the next action so a project can resume cleanly.

Save the state of the work, not a diary of every message.

Identify what someone needs to resume

A useful handoff names the goal, current artifact, important decisions, known problems, and next action. It should let a new collaborator find the work and understand its state. A transcript is often much longer than necessary and may include abandoned approaches. Keep a transcript if you need it, but do not make reading it the only way to understand the project.

Separate completed work from proposals

Use plain status language: implemented and checked, implemented but untested, proposed, or blocked by a missing input. A summary that turns “we could add search” into “search is complete” creates confusion on the next session. Link to the artifact or evidence for a completed claim. Record exactly what still needs testing rather than saying “everything looks good.”

Preserve the reasons behind important decisions

A decision without its reason can be accidentally reversed. If you chose a local file because the data should stay on the device, say so. If a deadline is provisional, preserve that qualification. Keep unresolved disagreements visible and identify who or what can resolve them. Avoid copying stale details simply because they appeared in an earlier summary.

Review the handoff yourself

Before ending a session, read the handoff against the actual work. Check file names, next steps, and claims of completion. At the start of the next session, ask the assistant to inspect the current artifact before continuing. Files may have changed since the summary was written. A handoff is an orientation aid; current evidence establishes the actual state.

A worked example

Original teaching example, not a recorded model run.

Vague starting point: Remember everything for next time.

A more useful brief

Write a handoff with the goal, current files, confirmed decisions and reasons, completed checks, unresolved problems, and the next concrete action. Distinguish implemented work from proposals. Include source locations for details that must be checked exactly.

Why this helps: The result is useful even in a fresh conversation because it describes the work rather than depending on implicit memory.

Your turn

Write a handoff for an unfinished personal project. Come back later and use it to identify the next action without rereading the chat.

You are looking for this: You can resume the task and locate the current artifact in a few minutes.

A quick check

A handoff says a feature is complete, but the files changed afterward. What governs?

  1. The old summary
  2. The current artifact and fresh checks
  3. The longest previous message

Answer: The current artifact and fresh checks

Use the handoff for orientation and verify drift-prone details in the current work.
