Astra, Fable 5.1 and the model rumors: what matters on September 6

A new model name can change the conversation overnight. Your actual work changes more slowly: there are still source files to understand, decisions to make and results to inspect. This edition separates documented releases from restricted access and speculation, then asks a practical question: what would make these changes worth trying on your own unfinished project?

Confirmed: GPT-6 Astra is documented

OpenAI’s current model reference lists GPT-6 Astra for complex reasoning, coding, computer use, research and document creation. It documents text and image input, text output and a range of supported tools. These are documented model and API capabilities; the tools available in a particular app still depend on its environment.

The practical experiment is to give it a coherent piece of work with a finish you can inspect. A report should include its source trail. A small application should open and perform the requested action. A document should be read after export. Those requirements remain useful even when the model becomes more capable.

Confirmed: Fable 5.1; restricted access is a separate question

Anthropic’s September announcement introduces Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1. It describes the same underlying model with different safeguards and trusted-access arrangements for Mythos. The announcement also discusses changes to efficiency and safeguards. Those provider claims are not an independent head-to-head evaluation by Power of AI.

For an everyday reader, availability matters before a benchmark. Check the model picker and the current access terms for your account. A restricted model announcement is not a promise that you can select it today. Confirmed changes also extend beyond OpenAI and Anthropic

Google announced Gemini 3.8 Flash and 3.8 Flash Cyber on September 2. Its announcement distinguishes ordinary Flash availability from prioritized Cyber access through its Fairwind Program. The xAI release notes date Grok 4.6 API availability to August 12. The release-notes page being updated on September 2 does not make September 2 the model’s launch date.

These products should not be collapsed into a single league table. A research workflow with the right sources can be more useful than a stronger model without them. A coding environment that can run your project can accomplish something a standalone chat cannot. Compare the whole working setup and record the model as one part of it.

Rumor watch: no invented launch calendar

This edition does not have a verified primary announcement establishing the names, dates or access terms of additional future flagship releases. That is the boundary of this source check, not a claim that no private development is happening. We are leaving an unconfirmed future-model slot visibly unconfirmed instead of filling it with a plausible codename.

A screenshot, an anonymous benchmark label or a widely repeated post can be a lead. Before it becomes release guidance, ask who originally made the claim, what evidence is public and what an official statement actually confirms. “Announced,” “available to my account” and “rumored” describe different states. Choose one piece of unfinished work and save a common brief. Run a small trial with the tools you already have. Record the inputs supplied, the result produced, the checks passed and the edits you still had to make. Try a second approach only when it can answer a useful comparison question.
