The Associated Press reports growing unease among US shoppers as chains such as Walmart and Whole Foods roll out digital price tags and AI-assisted pricing software that makes frequent price changes easy. Lawmakers in at least 30 states considered pricing bills this year, and Maryland, New Jersey and Connecticut have limited using shoppers’ personal data to set prices. Walmart’s CEO wrote that the company “prices the product, not the person”. One survey found 28% of business leaders already use AI for real-time pricing.

**Why it matters to you:** Prices that change by the hour, or by who is buying, make it harder to know if you are getting a fair deal. The same tools are coming to stores everywhere, including Canada.
