# What to give AI: build a useful context pack

Make a reusable project brief with facts, examples, constraints, and a clear record of what changed.

More material is useful only when the assistant can tell what matters now.

## Make the invisible background visible

A colleague may know your audience, deadlines, and decisions from months of shared work. A new chat may not. A useful context pack supplies the information needed for this task: purpose, audience, approved facts, constraints, and what a successful output looks like. Keep instructions separate from the source material. A quote in a document is evidence to inspect, not a command to follow.

## Build a pack you can maintain

For a community newsletter, start with the audience, a short voice example, confirmed events, the publication date, and excluded topics. Label the event sheet with its actual update date. If an event changes, replace the obsolete entry rather than leaving two competing versions. A short current pack is easier to maintain than a giant history of every discussion.

## Give each source a job

Explain why you included a file: the style sample shows tone, the event sheet supplies facts, and the previous issue shows layout. If sources disagree, state which is authoritative for the task or ask the assistant to surface the conflict. Do not expect filenames alone to settle it. A file named final-final can still be obsolete.

## Create a handoff at a natural stopping point

When a conversation becomes long or the task changes, write a concise handoff: goal, current artifact, decisions, open questions, and next action. Read the handoff before reusing it; summaries can omit a qualification or preserve an outdated assumption. Keep original evidence available for claims that need exact wording. The summary helps you resume, while the source remains the place to verify.

## A worked example

Original teaching example, not a recorded model run.

Vague starting point: Here are 27 files. Make the newsletter.

### A more useful brief

Use events-September as the source of event facts and the sample paragraph only for tone. The audience is local volunteers. Draft a 400-word newsletter for September 12. Flag conflicting dates. Ask for missing facts instead of filling them in.

Why this helps: Each input has an explicit purpose, so the assistant has less ambiguity about what to use and what to preserve.

## Your turn

Create a one-page context pack for something you do regularly. Remove one outdated fact and identify one missing fact.

You are looking for this: Another person could use the pack to understand the task without reading your entire chat history.

## A quick check

Two supplied files disagree on a deadline. What belongs in the request?

1. Use whichever date appears more often
2. Choose the more convenient date
3. Identify the conflict and establish which source governs

Answer: Identify the conflict and establish which source governs

Frequency and convenience do not establish authority. Resolve the source conflict.

## Sources and how to read this guide

Examples and exercises are original teaching material, not recorded model runs, measured time savings, or certifications. Official sources were consulted September 6, 2026. Product behavior can change.
